May Day

Oil on Panel

As a young teenager, I watched out my living room window in Vancouver, WA as Mt. St. Helens erupted on a bright, clear May 18, 1980 Sunday morning. The veneer of permanence I (and the entire Northwest for that matter) had lived under suddenly vanished. The lilies and peacock in this painting, both symbols of purity and vanity respectively, reflect on the myriad ways cataclysmic change changed our lives on that fateful day.
