For several decades I was an avid mountaineer in the Pacific Northwest. Passing through gnarled trees on an approach, finding holds in crystalline rock, and being immersed in the constantly changing weather were awe-inspiring experiences. In 1998, seeking relief from the pressures of my electronics career, I first tried woodturning and stone carving. These disparate materials were soon merged as I developed techniques to create imagery from my mountaineering experiences in woodturned objects with mineral crystal inlay. An interest in Japanese art and Buddhist poetry influenced the designs as my technical skills developed. I now strive to conceive and create pieces that reach out and connect with others – works to stir the viewer’s memory and evoke a moment in time.
